The governments of Canada and Yukon have signed a 10-year agreement under the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, which aims to expand and improve critical infrastructure needed to support housing development. The agreement will see $74.2 million from the federal government, with Yukon contributing an additional $24.7 million.

The funding is intended to help municipalities and First Nations across the territory develop or upgrade essential infrastructure related to drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste. These improvements are expected to enable the construction of new homes, increase housing density, and address growing demand for affordable housing.

As part of Canada’s broader Housing Plan, the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund is designed to provide long-term funding to provinces and territories for projects that facilitate housing expansion. Those that do not finalize agreements will see their allocated funding redirected to a direct delivery stream supporting municipalities and Indigenous communities.

Federal and territorial officials framed the agreement as a step toward addressing Yukon’s housing challenges. MP Brendan Hanley emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure to accelerate home construction, while Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai highlighted the role of secure, long-term investment in meeting the territory’s housing needs. Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn reiterated the significance of federal funding in supporting critical infrastructure projects.

The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, announced in Budget 2024, is part of Ottawa’s effort to ease the housing crisis through infrastructure investment. Under the program, funding applications for municipalities and Indigenous communities will be accepted until 2025. The initiative aligns with the federal government’s stated priorities of increasing housing supply, improving affordability, and supporting communities with urgent housing needs.
