The New O.K Corral, 14 reports of gunshots in 24 hours. An extremely busy weekend for the WPS
The Winnipeg Police Service experienced a particularly busy 24 hour period from Saturday morning, May 23, until Sunday morning, May 24
Winnipeg is a beautiful city; geographically it is the heart of Canada and home to the countries friendliest people. It’s well known for its diversity, festivals and food, but in the last ten years, it has also became known for being the homicide capital of Canada.
In 2019, violent crimes in Winnipeg’s hit an all-time high which contributed to its record-setting 44 homicides in that year. That amount surpassed the 41 homicides that set the record in 2011.
As noted, the Winnipeg Police Services were extremely busy over the weekend attending to resource-intensive calls:
- Saturday, 10:55 a.m., WPS responded to a report of an adult female that had been stabbed on Pacific Avenue. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition but has since been stabilized. A female was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault.
- At 3:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of gunshots on Bannatyne Avenue. The WPS Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate this incident.
- At 8:20 p.m., officers responded to the area of Sargent Avenue and Furby Street for a male that had been shot. The victim is recovering in hospital, and the Major Crimes Unit is continuing with the investigation.
- 9:55 p.m, officers responded to a report of gunshots on Dufferin Avenue. The WPS Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate this incident.
- 10:55 p.m., officers responded to a report of a male spotted with a gun on Sutton Ave. This investigation is ongoing.
- 11:20 p.m., officers responded to a male that had been stabbed in the 500 block of Portage Avenue. The victim is recovering in hospital, and the Major Crimes Unit is continuing with the investigation.
- Sunday, 1:45 a.m., officers responded to a male that had been stabbed on Mountain Avenue. The victim is recovering in hospital. One male was detained.
- Sunday, 1:50 a.m., officers responded to a male that had been stabbed on Logan Avenue. The victim is recovering in hospital, and the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
Including the above incidents, officers responded to 14 reports of gunfire in the 24-hour period.
Winnipeg is a city that has still not solved its Meth crisis, its disproportionate support to under funded communities and as a result of these disparities and perennial austerity cuts from the province, violent crimes will continue to escalate.
