In America, politicians don’t truly make the laws; the real power lies with big money donors, large corporations, and special interest groups. These entities craft the policies, and politicians merely enforce them, doing everything they can to ensure the country runs on the ideas of their financial backers.
The influence of these powerful groups is blatant. Climate change initiatives remain feeble because fossil fuel companies and other industrial giants prioritize profits over the planet. Gun control measures are consistently undermined by the gun lobby, particularly the NRA, which holds immense sway over lawmakers despite public demand for stricter regulations.
Social policies are equally compromised. Abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, and gender affirmation are all battlegrounds where conservative and religious groups exert disproportionate influence, especially in the Bible Belt. The laws reflect the interests of these groups rather than the diverse needs of the population.
Once these policies are in place, changing them is almost impossible. Politicians depend on the financial support of these powerful entities, making them reluctant to challenge the status quo. Legislative gridlock, driven by partisan politics, ensures that outdated or harmful policies remain untouched.
The consequences are dire. Trust in democratic institutions erodes when it’s clear that laws serve narrow interests rather than the public good. Social and economic inequalities deepen as policies benefit a privileged few at the expense of the many, stalling progress on critical issues like climate change, gun violence, and social justice.
This grim reality is unlikely to change. In America, money and power reign supreme, and the interests of the wealthy will always overshadow the needs of the people. The legislative landscape will continue to be shaped by those with the deepest pockets, perpetuating a cycle of inequality and discontent that undermines the very foundation of democracy.
