The world has witnessed the brutal attacks by Hamas on innocent Israeli citizens. These acts of violence have profoundly impacted the Israeli people and Palestinian civilians who strive for peace. These attacks have put innocent Palestinians and Israelis at the forefront of this ongoing conflict and pushed any hopes of a free and open society, free from occupation, off the table. This situation has persisted for over half a century, and it is time to reflect on the devastating consequences of such actions.
It is crucial to remember that war should always be the last option, a step taken when all other means of resolution have failed. The graphic images of what Hamas is doing to Israeli civilians are heart-wrenching. While the purpose of war is often to defeat your enemies, rules of engagement and principles must be upheld. Attacking civilians is a blatant violation of these principles and a grave injustice.
Nobody wants to witness the grim realities of armed conflicts, where prisoners of war are subjected to the most inhumane treatment or where the horrors of conflict result in lifeless bodies strewn across battlefields. The sight of such despicable acts and their documentation in videos is a stark reminder of the disturbing nature of war, serving as a testament to the depths of human suffering and cruelty that we must strive to prevent and condemn. War’s brutality is a stark reminder that peaceful resolutions are preferable and necessary to avoid such harrowing scenes.
The deep-seated animosity between Israel and Hamas is not only affecting these two parties. Still, it also sows the seeds of hatred among Palestinians and Jewish people who genuinely desire peace. What did Hamas expect Israel”s response would be? Traditionally, wars are fought between the military forces of nations, not against civilians. Yet, by targeting innocent civilians, Hamas has set the course for a complete siege of Gaza by the Israeli Defense Forces, resulting in mounting casualties on both sides.
The world has long been aware that the situation in Gaza and Israel has always been an incident away from a full-blown war. Violence is not, and will never be, the solution to this complex issue. But is it really that complex when innocent people are dying every minute? Instead, the war between Israel and Hamas exacerbates a volatile situation, causing more pain, suffering, and loss of life.
It is imperative that we, as a global society, continue to strongly condemn unequivocally all acts of violence and war. We are stronger together than we will ever be apart. The solution to this long-standing conflict lies in dialogue, negotiation, and diplomacy. We can only hope for a peaceful resolution respecting the rights and aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians. It is time for all parties involved to recommit to peace and work towards a future where conflict and suffering are replaced by understanding and cooperation.
