Zelensky will meet with Biden and address the U.S Congress

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky made a surprise visit to America to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden and to address Congress. The details of how long the trip was in place remain shrouded in secrecy, as was his trip. It was only announced President Zelensky was on his way to Washington D.C well after his plane cleared international waters.

Zelensky’s trip to Washington was the first time the President had left Ukraine since the invasion of Russia’s illegal war. Zelensky travelled by train to Poland and then hitched a ride on a U.S. military plane to Washington, where he will thank the American people and address the U.S. Congress.

Zelensky’s timing comes at a crucial point in the war with Russia as the incoming Republican Congress has been pro-Putin and indicated its intention to provide aid to Ukraine no longer. This comes after U.S President Biden ok another $2 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, which includes the long-range Partio Missiles that Zelensky’s has been requesting since the start of the war.

Wartime visits are rare when a rainstorm of missiles and artillery bombards a leader’s country. But they are strategic and necessary in the case of Zelensky’s. It is unsure as to if his visit will sway the staunch M.A.G.A. Republican Congress to stay the course, but one thing is sure, Zelensky’s speech will be powerful and make them question what is their role in government if it’s not to make a significant change in the world.
