Today the British Government reported it had deployed 100 UK Defence medical specialists to Turkey in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that struck the country in recent days. This includes the deployment of the RAF Critical Care Air Support Team (CCAST), which consists of a team of highly skilled medical professionals and equipment technicians, and was flown to Adiyaman Airport in Turkey aboard a RAF C-130 Hercules aircraft.
The UK is working alongside Norway and the Netherlands, who are also operating C-130s, to provide much-needed medical support and aid to the people of Turkey during this difficult time. Each flight is capable of caring for and transporting up to 27 patients at a time, with the team providing critical care and medical assistance to those who have been affected by the earthquake.
The RAF CCAST team is made up of a highly skilled group of medical professionals, including a consultant anaesthetist, five nurses, three medics, a paramedic, and a medical equipment technician. The team is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and has the capability to care for and transport up to 27 patients at a time. In addition to the deployment of medical professionals, the RAF has also flown 15 tonnes of aid to Turkey, including thousands of thermal blankets to help keep survivors warm in sub-zero temperatures. This support has been made possible thanks to £25 million in new funding that was announced yesterday, which will help to support the ongoing response to the earthquake.
