U.K Prime Minister Boris Johnson Resigns After 60 Members Of Parliament Quit

An Autumn election will be held to decide Britain’s New Prime Minister

June 7th, 2022, marks the day the United Kingdoms Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, resigns from office.

This comes after over 50 Members of Parliament (M.P.) sent in their resignation letters and posted them to Twitter. This left Johnson with only one way of responding: to hand over his title as the Prime Minister of England.

Boris Johnson has faced a few scandals in the past years. He has been caught in lies, accused of crude acts, and even required a no-confidence vote. As a result of these instances, M.P’s are concerned about his disrespectful and unprofessional behavior. Many who resigned mentioned that Johnson was not the ideal person to be in charge of important issues like tax breaks, military, and world negotiations.

On Tuesday, June 5th, Johnson’s previous Chancellor resigned, and just one day after, MP, Michael Gove, was fired by Johnson because Gove asked the PM to step down, and Johnson said he would not.

Gove’s resignation letter posted to Twitter states that he “No longer believes these values are being upheld,” the values being those of honesty and respect. A little while after, the new Challoner, Nahdim Zahawi, whom Boris Johnson elected only 36 hours before the post, also stepped forward, calling for a resignation. In his letter, the new Chancellor claimed Johnson was “not sustainable” for this position and said he needed to “Go now.”

Following the resignation of Gove, more M.P.’s resigned, bringing the total up to 60. According to these MPs, Johnson should resign and exit the office of the Prime Minister.

The message finally got through to Johnson. Around 9:30 am, there was a statement from his office that he would resign and speak to the people. Around 12:30 pm, Boris Johnson took the stage and announced his resignation. He was sad to be leaving his position and regretted he could not stay the entire term. Over the summer, there will be a leadership election to name the new Prime Minister. During the waiting period of this transition, Boris Johnson will stay until the elections are over.

By the end of summer and the start of autumn, the United Kingdom will find itself with a new Prime Minister.
