In a hopeful and ambitious State of the Nation Address, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) outlined his vision for the country’s future. Speaking before a joint session of parliament in Kinshasa, the president pledged to strengthen the economy, improve security, and implement constitutional reforms, promising transformative changes for the Congolese people.

Tshisekedi reflected on the successes of his administration while acknowledging the challenges ahead. He emphasized plans to enhance infrastructure by building roads, bolster the healthcare system, and improve the social welfare of citizens. Notably, he addressed the pressing issue of insecurity in the eastern DRC, where ongoing conflicts with the M23 rebel group have displaced more than two million people since 2022. He credited the Congolese army, with support from Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops, for repelling aggressors and restoring a measure of stability.

The president’s remarks were not without acknowledgment of the economic strain caused by increased military spending. The depreciation of the Congolese franc against the US dollar has exacerbated the cost of living, driving up prices for basic goods. Tshisekedi assured citizens of the government’s commitment to stabilizing the foreign exchange rate, a move anticipated to ease inflation and reduce the cost of essential commodities. Finance expert George Ilunga noted that such measures could significantly impact fuel and other goods critical to daily life.

Tshisekedi also announced steps to reduce import taxes, a bid to improve purchasing power for citizens. This pragmatic approach earned praise from various sectors, including Kinshasa-based businessman Abraham Luakabwanga, who lauded the president’s focus on achievable goals rather than unattainable dreams. “He pinpointed the main subjects,” Luakabwanga remarked, emphasizing the practical tone of the address.

In his concluding remarks, the president called for acceptance of constitutional reforms designed to reinforce the country’s sovereignty and governance structures. This push for reform signals a need to address systemic issues and lay a foundation for sustainable progress.

While optimism marked Tshisekedi’s speech, it remains to be seen whether his administration can translate promises into tangible results. As the DRC grapples with conflict, economic instability, and the weight of unrealized potential in its mineral-rich land, the president’s words serve as a rallying call for unity and action. His vision offers a roadmap toward transforming the DRC into a regional powerhouse, but its realization will require unwavering commitment and the collective effort of its people.
