30 agents in 20 vehicles pulled up to Trump’s home in Florida.
On Monday, August 8th, 2022, the F.B.I. raided former President Trump’s home in Palm Beach, Florida. At the time of the raid, Trump was not at his home in Mar-a-Lago but in New York at the Trump Tower. Trump was unaware that this raid was going to take place.
The search was intended to look for classified documents that Trump took with him after leaving the White House in 2021. They arrived in 20 vehicles with 30 men and took the day looking through the home and, according to Trump, broke into his private safe.
The Justice Department asked for the search warrant after receiving 15 boxes earlier this year that Trump took to Mar-a-logo. To get this raid approved, the Justice Department had enough evidence that swayed a judge to support the warrant.
This investigation goes alongside the January 6th Committee looking at the attack on the Capital; however, where Congress does not have the power to make arrests, the Justice Department does. There are laws requiring five years of prison for removing classified documents from an unauthorized location.
The National Archives and Record Administration asked the Justice Department to conduct a court-ordered search of Trump’s home.
Trump spoke about the search and said, “America had now become one of those countries, corrupt to a level not seen before.”
Several Republicans have criticized the Justice Department for its actions, calling it ‘Warnioned politicization’ and saying that the search was unnecessary. The irony is that when Trump was in office, he used the Justice Department to harass and intimidate Americans.
Things are heating up as midterms come closer. Trump has said he wants to run again for the election in 2024; however, with the new findings and investigation circling him, it seems it will take a lot more to get there.
