Prime Minister Justin Trudeau concluded his participation in the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he joined world leaders to address pressing global issues. The summit focused on combating hunger and poverty, expanding clean energy investments, and fostering greater economic inclusion for marginalized communities.
Canada committed to two major international initiatives: the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, spearheaded by Brazil, and the UK-led Global Clean Power Alliance. These partnerships aim to address food insecurity exacerbated by climate change and accelerate the global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Trudeau also used the platform to address security concerns, condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has now persisted for over 1,000 days, and highlighting Canada’s support for stability in conflict zones like the Middle East.
The Prime Minister announced $68 million in new funding, targeting organized crime, environmental conservation, and gender equity. The funds include $24 million for anti-trafficking measures, $25 million for biodiversity and food security efforts, and $19 million to combat violence against women and support their participation in environmental and economic initiatives.
During the summit, Trudeau participated in discussions on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and joined other leaders in endorsing a declaration committing to these objectives. He also met with key international figures, including U.S. President Joe Biden, U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, to discuss bilateral and global priorities.
As South Africa prepares to assume the G20 Presidency in 2025 under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainable Development,” Canada reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral cooperation to address shared challenges.
