Prime Minister Trudeau extends CERB payments for another two months.

The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) gives financial support to employed and self-employed Canadians who are directly affected by COVID-19.

Eligible Canadians were receiving $2,000 for a 4-week period (the same as $500 a week). The Canadian government introduced the CERB at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic which made it easy for claimants to start receiving benefits.

The CERB replaced the traditional unemployment process to ensure funds flowed quickly to Canadians in need of financial support. The two month extension is will help those Canadians who have still not been able to secure employment or return to work.

“The reality is that there are three million people out of work who are looking for work, and even as our economy is reopening, there are many, many more people out of work, willing to work, than there are jobs available,” said Prime Minister Trudeau.
