In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at making electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible to the masses, France has unveiled a comprehensive plan that allows its citizens to acquire an electric vehicle for as little as 100 euros per month. This proactive strategy recognizes the fact that EVs have remained beyond the financial reach of most buyers and seeks to bridge this gap effectively. The pressing need for increased electric vehicle charging infrastructure has not gone unnoticed by the French government. At the onset of 2022, France boasted less than 54,000 electric vehicle charging station spaces, significantly hindering the widespread adoption of EVs. However, the first few months of 2023 witnessed an unprecedented surge in electric vehicle charging station installations, marking a significant turning point in the country’s electrification efforts.
The emergence of high-power terminals has been nothing short of impressive. France currently has approximately 14,500 high-power terminals, including 7,000 ultra-high-power terminals capable of delivering charging speeds exceeding 150 kW. The proliferation of high-power terminals, classified as those with a capacity of 150 kW and above, has experienced a notable twofold increase since the beginning of 2023. More than 2,500 charging points have been financed through this initiative, solidifying France’s commitment to creating a robust charging infrastructure.
In addition to this achievement, 300 million euros has been allocated from the ambitious France 2030 initiative to develop fast charging stations. This substantial investment, facilitated through a dedicated call for projects, aims to fortify the charging network and expedite the transition to electric mobility throughout the country.
Aside from focusing on fast charging, France proactively provides charging points throughout its territory. With over 1,400,000 charging points deployed, including private terminals within companies and residences, the country is paving the way for convenient and accessible charging opportunities for EV owners.
Looking ahead, the French government has set an ambitious target of establishing 400,000 charging points open to the public by the year 2030.
