Payette’s resignation is affective immediately
Julie Payette and her senior advisor, Assunta di Lorenzo have tendered their resignation effective immediately, after the results of a scathing report conducted by an independent third party into the workplace environment of Rideau Hall.
In 2020 many reports started to surface about the toxicity and abusive culture within the offices of the Governor General. Staff members felt intimidated and often were on the receiving end of unpleasant temper tantrums that were filled profanity and vulgar language.
The Office of the Privy Council (PCO) acted swiftly with the hiring of a third party to review the allegations of workplace harassment at Rideau Hall. According to sources, the details of the concluded report were damning and would result in further investigation of Payette had she not tendered her resignation.
“While no formal complaints or official grievances were made during my tenure, which would have immediately triggered a detailed investigation as prescribed by law and the collective agreements in place, I still take these allegations very seriously.
“We all experience things differently, but we should always strive to do better and be attentive to one another’s perceptions. Everyone has right to a healthy and safe work environment.” Said Payette in a departing statement
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accepted the resignation of Payette and has appointed Chief Justice Richard Wagner to serve as the acting Governor General until a permanent replacement is announced.
