Today Marks The 87th Solemn Anniversary Of The Holodomor-Genocide

The Holodomor is stark reminder of the pain and suffering endured by the people of Ukraine at the hands of the Stalin Regime

Today, along with Ukrainian communities in Canada and around the world, we commemorate the tragedy of the Holodomor, or Death by Starvation, of 1932-1933, when millions of innocent Ukrainians perished as a result of the actions of the Soviet totalitarian regime of Joseph Stalin.

“On this solemn anniversary, I encourage all Canadians to honour the memory of the victims of the Holodomor, and recognize the ways that Ukrainian Canadians have contributed to building a better country for all of us. I also reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for a free and independent Ukraine.” The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau

To eliminate any vestiges of Ukrainian nationalism and force hereto independent villagers into collectivization, Stalin passed numerous decrees that resulted in the elimination of thousands of successful peasants (kulaks), forced peasants and their lands to be incorporated into state-owned collective farms and set unreasonably high quotas of grain to be collected by the state.  To punish those that could not meet these quotas, all foodstuffs were forcibly seized by the Soviets and villages were blockaded, leaving innocent villagers to starve.

“Today we honor the memory of the innocent victims of one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the Ukrainian people of 1932-1933. This crime of the Soviet government is one of the most brutal and large-scale crimes against humanity of the 20th century.” Said Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine Minister of Foreign Affairs.

While historians and statisticians today may differ about the exact number of deaths, conservative estimates put the numbers in Ukraine who starved to death at between 4,500,000 and 7,000,000, 30 percent of them children.

On this 87^th solemn anniversary of the Holodomor-Genocide, let us honour the memory of the innocent millions of Ukrainians who perished and reaffirm our vow as Canadians to never forget or allow such a tragedy ever to occur again.  Vichnaya Pamyat’! Eternal Memory to the Innocent Victims!
