270 died in the Lockerbie bombing of Pan AM Flight 103
A Libyan man was accused of building a bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over the Lockerbie township in December 1988, is now in U.S. custody, authorities said on Sunday. Abu Agila Moussoud was charged in the U.S. two years ago following allegations that he played a crucial role in the bombings.
Abu Agila Moussoud is being held for trial on charges of committing international acts of terrorism. Sunday, the Scottish Crown Office and Procurator-Generals Service informed the families of 270 victims of Lockerbie that the suspect is being held in the U.S.
He will be the first Libyan intelligence officer to face trial in a U.S. courtroom, despite being the third Libyan intelligence officer charged in the U.S. for his involvement in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. Another Libyan remains the only man convicted of the bombing, but U.S. and Scottish authorities are now seeking to change that by charging him.
One of the other men involved in the bombing, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was convicted for bombing Pan Am 103 at Lockerbie in 2001, being tried at a special Scottish Court in The Netherlands. The only person convicted for his role in the Lockerbie bombing is Abdelbaset Ali Mohamed al-Megrahi, also from Libya.
