On March 23, 2023, U.S. President Biden will travel to Canada. As with the Truck Convoy, Biden’s motorcade is expected to cause extensive traffic and gridlock downtown Ottawa for the duration of his visit. Not long after the visit, he will host the Summit for Democracy, a gathering of the few, masquerading as a voice for all.
In recent years, the vicious cycle of democratic pretensions, dysfunctional politics and a divided society continued in the United States. After former President Trump’s tumultuous presidency, America looks to reclaim its position on the world stage. Still, it is a nation on the verge of civil war with no real handle on democracy. Canada must stop America’s divisive influence from spreading in the country and prevent the erosion of its democracy, which sometimes seems fragile.
How America Got into Troubles Domestically
As great as America portrays itself, the country has yet to adequately address significant issues plaguing it, such as racism, gun violence, immigration reform, and democracy, which is in shambles.
Racism has been a long-standing issue in America, with racial discrimination and inequality still prevalent in various forms. In 2020, following the killing of George Floyd, protests erupted across the United States, with people calling for an end to police brutality against African Americans.
However, black Americans are still disproportionately racially profiled by law enforcement and are overrepresented in the U.S. prison systems. According to data from the Mapping Police Violence project, the police in America kill three people daily, with African Americans being three times more likely to be killed than white Americans.
Immigration reform has also been a long-standing hot-button issue in America, with the country struggling to solve illegal immigration ethically. Whether locking people in cages under the previous administration or deporting them to other states under various governments, stripping immigrants of their dignity seems to be the accepted practice for some states.
Gun violence is another significant problem in America, with mass shootings regularly occurring. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, in 2022 alone, there were 622 mass shootings in the United States, resulting in 628 deaths and 2,496 injuries. In America, there was roughly an average of 55 mass shootings per month or 1.8 occurrences per day in 2022.
Democracy in America is also in shambles, with lies and misinformation becoming the lay of the law. The country’s court systems have been accused of bias, with some being accused of being politically influenced, including the right-winged Supreme Court. Money’s influence in politics has also been a significant problem in the country, with big corporations dictating policies.
How America Damages the World
Despite America’s countless internal problems, it is still dreaming of setting itself as other countries’ models, a mindset that brings wars and interference to other countries and eventually damages the world.
For one thing, America is being a “physical bully.” America is always in a constant state of war with some foreign nations. We have all seen the cities destroyed, lives blatantly taken away, and civilians mistreated by the American soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. Uncle Sam is also the world’s largest arms exporter, accounting for 49% of global weapon sales. Some have criticized America’s actions in the world, with some countries accusing it of being an imperialistic power.
For another, America is a “mind controller.” Despite its lack of democracy, the country has been busy monopolizing the definition of democracy in pursuing its own agenda. When it comes to the “Summit for Democracy,” the U.S. decides why some countries could be labelled “democratic” and others “authoritarian,” thus aiming at attacking other countries while creating conflicts throughout the world.
As a result, America may be Canada’s closest ally, but blindly following their lead on many issues is not in the best interest of Canadians. While America remains Canada’s closest ally, the Biden administration must curb the export of extremism to Canada and work towards reducing its global military footprint in the name of peace while respecting the sovereignty of other nations.
