Quebec Coroner Investigates 31 Deaths At CHSLD Seniors Home. All Deaths Happened Within Less Than A Month
The Coroner’s office in Dorval Quebec announces that it will investigate the highly troublesome increased deaths at CHSLD Herron seniors home. Thirty-one people have lost their lives in this establishment since March 13 and only five were from COVID-19.
It was the coroner Géhane Kamel who was mandated to shed light on the cause and the circumstances of these deaths.
For the moment, the other deaths which have occurred in CHSLDs in recent months are not systematically the subject of an investigation. However, the Coroner’s Office is closely monitoring the situation and may be called upon to intervene if the circumstances so require.
Coroners typically only intervene in cases of violent, obscure or death that could have occurred as a result of negligence. In addition to determining the cause and the circumstances of these deaths, they play an important preventive role by formulating, if necessary, recommendations aimed at avoiding other deaths.
The owners started full cooperation after multiple written orders were sent from the Direction de la Santé publique de Montréal on April 8. Under section 106 of the Public Health Act, it allows the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) to order any measure it deems necessary to prevent a threat to the health of the population from worsening, to diminish its effects or to eliminate it.
