The foreign Minister will assure Kyiv of the continued support of the United States for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo will meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday. The meeting will take place just a few weeks after the US House of Representatives approved articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing him of abuse of power when interacting with Ukraine.
According to the State Department, Pompeo will also meet with the Foreign Minister and Defense Minister of Ukraine and assure them that the United States supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Recall that in 2014, Russia annexed the Crimea Peninsula belonging to Ukraine. In the same year, Pro-Russian separatist unrest began in Eastern Ukraine.
It is unclear whether Trump’s impeachment will be discussed during Pompeo’s visit to Ukraine.
A House of Representatives investigation concluded that Trump withheld military aid allocated to Ukraine to put pressure on Kyiv and get an investigation into one of his political rivals, Democrat Joe Biden.
During the visit, Pompeo will also discuss issues related to human rights, the investment climate, and planned reforms.
