Ottawa, Ontario – Parliamentary Secretary Robert Oliphant will head to London this week to represent Canada at Commonwealth Week, taking place from March 11 to 13, 2024.
Oliphant will participate in official ceremonies for Commonwealth Day, which this year carries the theme “One Resilient Future: Transforming Our World.” The events also mark the 75th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth.
A key aspect of Oliphant’s visit will be his involvement with the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). CMAG is a select group of foreign ministers who collaborate on addressing challenges faced by member countries and upholding the Commonwealth’s core values, including democracy and human rights.
“Canada is a proud member of the Commonwealth,” Oliphant said. “I’m eager to discuss advancing shared priorities, particularly the global promotion of human rights, with fellow members. Our focus will be on fostering understanding, building consensus, and driving action for a more prosperous and inclusive future for all.”
Canada is the second-largest financial contributor to the Commonwealth, providing over $14 million in 2023-2024. This funding supports the organization’s core functions and various initiatives on education and gender equality.
