Ontario Suspends In-Class Learning Indefinitely

2021 School year will continue with distance learning

The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the way the world looks at remote learning. In the past, remote learning was considered more for adults taking distance courses or upgrading their academic credentials but now that’s all changed.

Remote learning has been in place for all Canadian cities with the hopes of bending the curve. Today Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the end to in-class learning for the remainder of the 2021 school year. With this announcement, schools will continue distance learning.

The decision to suspend in-class learning comes at a time where Ontario is about to loosen its COVID-19 restrictions as it starts to slowly reopen the Province. Ontario’s COVID-19 cases have seen a large influx of multiple variants and continue to be among the highest in Canada.

The choice by the Ford Government to close schools is drawing both criticism and praise from Ontarians. Closing schools is never a popular decision but it could be the right one. Schools across the country have cancelled end of year exams and many are inching closer to also cancelling in-class learning for the remainder of the 2021 school term.
