Ontario Extends Emergency Orders to July 10. Restrictions for sporting and indoor facilities will be lifted

The Ontario government has extended all emergency orders currently in force that were made under s.7.0.2 (4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act until July 10, 2020.

The extension of the emergency orders will allow key measures needed in the fight against COVID-19 to continue, including allowing front-line health care providers and public health units to redeploy staff where they are needed most.

In total, 12,391 people have recovered from COVID-19, an increase of 99 cases since yesterday. To date, there have been 1,084 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto.

With the growing number of new cases, the government is still trying to figure out how to strike the right balance in keeping the public safe and restarting the economy.

The Ford government plans to enter into stage 2 of its economic restart plan by removing the restrictions for indoor sports and recreational fitness activities facilities. This will enable the facilities to be used by more businesses and organizations to train amateur or professional athletes, or to run certain non-contact amateur or professional athletic competitions.

In all cases, facility owners would only be able to permit activities to occur in a way that meets public health requirements. These changes will also enable many sports and recreational organizations around the province to again offer  sport training programming, helping more people return to sport in Ontario.

The government continues to review all these emergency orders to determine when and if it is safe to amend or lift them as restrictions are eased and more places in the province reopen in a safe and measured way.
