Liberal Leader Furey seeks majority with election call
Liberal Leader Andrew Furey has announced today his province is heading for a general election on February 13, 2021. Furey beat out longtime civil servant candidate John Abbott by over thirteen thousand points in his bid to becoming the leader of Liberal Party.
As the new Premier for Newfoundland and Labrador, Furey will have his work cut for him dealing with a multitude of issues. From the COVID-19 pandemic to high unemployment, Furey will need to find creative ways to tackle these key issues and prevent the province from filing for bankruptcy even with tens of millions in debt forgiven by the Federal Government.
Furey, currently does not hold a seat in the legislature but early polling indicates he will easily carry the Ball’s former riding of Humber-Gros Morne.
Furey’s Liberals are facing scrutiny for holding an election in the middle of a global pandemic, but there has been several elections held at all levels of government within Canada in the middle of the pandemic and was done so safely.
With a string of funding announcements leading up to the election call by the Furey government and key agreements finalized with CUPE, the Teachers Unions and other key industry players, the rookie Premier is poised to secure a majority government.
