Namse Udosen, Nigerian writer and literacy advocate, has been selected from a multi-pool of entries globally to take part in the 2023/2024 Chevening Scholarship awarded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office of the United Kingdom. Poet, short story writer, and essayist Mr. Udosen, author of the children’s books Amang Goes to the Village, Silly Sally, and Fundamental Etiquettes for Young Nigerians, remains a consistent voice, advocating for a learning and literacy culture, particularly in Kaduna State in the north and across the country.
In yesterday’s LinkedIn post, Namse remarked: “I am immensely proud of my achievements, and I can’t wait to see the impact I will make in the field of Education and Development.” The award recipient added: “My passion for community literacy and commitment to educational policy reform will undoubtedly create a positive ripple effect in Nigeria and beyond!”
Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, recently hosted Mr. Udosen and other Nigerian awardees in Abuja. The author used the occasion to interact with other winners and present Amang Goes to the Village to the High Commissioner. Mr. Namse Peter Udosen joins 43 other scholars from Nigeria in this year’s keenly competitive selection process. Other award winners from Nigeria are Pelumi Ajayi, Olajide Charles, Munira Musa Ladan, Deborah M. Adeniran, and Miragle Ogba. Paul Bennett, Rita Uzoma Okolo, Odera Akpata, Damilar Ojo, Itofa Ivarah, Ibraheem Bakare, Favour Godwill, and Oguntade S. David also made the list of winners.
The selection committee received 12,700 applications from Nigeria, with a worldwide figure of 70,000 for this year’s Chevening awards.
Mr. Udosen will be studying for a graduate degree in International Education and Development at the prestigious University of Sussex, United Kingdom.
“I am determined to make a difference and champion grassroots literacy. Upon completion of my studies, I intend to collaborate with organizations like the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP-UNESCO), UNICEF FCDO Services PLANE Nigeria to support educational policies at the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) level,” Mr. Udosen said in his post on LinkedIn while promising that, “my full story will be on my blog.”
