The Government of Canada and the City of Montreal have announced a significant joint investment totaling up to $67 million to support the extensive planting of trees and shrubs in Montreal’s East End. This initiative aims to enhance the health and quality of life of residents while bolstering the community’s resilience to climate change.
The funding, announced by the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, the Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, and Mayor Valérie Plante, underscores a commitment to mitigating the impact of climate change and safeguarding the well-being of citizens. The project is poised to address heat islands in Montreal’s East End and fortify the area’s natural infrastructure, providing essential support during extreme weather events.
With climate change exacerbating weather-related challenges, proactive measures are crucial for ensuring community safety and prosperity. The investment will facilitate the planting of 230,000 trees and 57,000 shrubs, enriching green spaces and fostering environmental sustainability in the region.
This initiative aligns with Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy, released in 2022, which commits $1.6 billion to address climate risks. An additional $489.1 million has been allocated to the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF), supporting projects like this aimed at enhancing community resilience.
