Mayoral Candidate Don Woodstock, Proposes Major Changes To Public Safety

If elected, Woodstock would work to impose a zero-tolerance approach and mandatory imprisonment for those uttering threats

Winnipeg Mayoral Candidate Don Woodstock held a press conference to denounce a series of death threats sent to him in the wake of comments made at an all-candidates debate. In light of the recent threats, Woodstock promised to work with law enforcement and the province’s attorney general to impose strict penalties for people who threaten political candidates. 

“If elected as Winnipeg’s next Mayor, I will work with all law enforcement and the province’s Attorney General to implement changes to the Manitoba Criminal code to implement a mandatory minimum jail term of one year and impose a fine of $25,000 for anyone convicted of making threats to candidates seeking public office.” Said, Woodstock

It is Woodstock’s intention to work with key stakeholders to ensure that we adopt mandatory laws for threats uttered in general, often targeting the most vulnerable groups, like seniors, in order that if there are threats, they are arrested and prosecuted.

He believes in a zero-tolerance approach, even for first-time offenders, because Winnipeg is a place of rules, not a ‘lawless’ society. “Laws are there to keep our citizens safe. We need laws with teeth. Failing which, our citizens are not going to feel safe. Winnipeg, it is time for us to be safe, again.” Added Woodstock

He calls on all Mayoral candidates and community leaders to condemn all acts and threats of violence against political candidates. As per Woodstock, Rick Shone has been the only candidate or community leaders have reached out to him to condemn acts of violence against all candidates.
