“I Can’t Breathe” – said George Floyd as he laid lifeless while civilians watched in horror as Minnesota Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020 during a routine police arrest after a store employee contacted them, when Floyd apparently passed a counterfeit $20 bill.

The murder of George Floyd was the breaking point for America and gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement that peacefully protested in support of unarmed Black Men being killed at the hands of white police officers. The brutal treatment of unarmed black men in America is not only systemic, it is inherited.

On Monday April 20th, disgraced former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty by a jury of his peers on one count of second degree murder, one count of third degree murder and one count of manslaughter. Chauvin will be remanded into custody as he awaits sentencing in 8 weeks. Chauvin faces a maximum of 75 years in prison.

Trump’s election will go down in history as one of the single most detrimental moments in history to democracy and racial equability as his administration repeatedly brought harm to minorities with is hateful rhetoric and dog whistles that ultimately lead to the deadly insurrection on Capitol Hill.
