January 6 Committee, To Vote On Criminal Charges Against Trump

After a year of investigation, the committee will vote to recommend charges against Trump for inciting the deadly insurrection

Today the January 6 committee will vote on whether to recommend the Department of Justice bring criminal charges against former President Trump, including rebellion, obstruction of official congressional proceedings, and conspiracy to defraud the United States for his role in inciting the deadly insurrection.

In the conclusion of its hearings, the committee alleges the former President oversaw and coordinated an illegal scheme to subvert the 2020 election – but the Justice Department, not Congress, is the only party capable of pressing criminal charges against Trump or his allies.

The move by the committee to target the disgraced former President is a significant move by the panel as it heads toward the end of a years-long probe. Trump’s encouragement of his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol is still considered a peaceful political discourse by the G.O.P., despite the over 300 people arrested and convicted of a crime and the loss of multiple lives.

If convicted, Trump will have no chance of returning to the Whitehouse effectively putting an end to his presidential bid. But before that happens, the Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith must first decide if there is enough evidence to convict 45. It is clear from the televised hearings by the January 6 committee that there is overwhelming evidence to warrant an indictment and, hopefully, a conviction.
