Canadian government announces it will triple the available spectrum for Wi-Fi to bring faster Internet to Canadians
It is hard to imagine there are still places throughout Canada that do not have a reliable way of connecting to the internet. Being connected is now considered an essential service that is vital to all Canadians, especially in the middle of a global pandemic. Luckily for Canadians, the federal government has committed hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure all Canadians have the ability to be connected.
“Just yesterday, François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the decision to open the 6 GHz band to support greater choice and affordability of wireless broadband for Canadian consumers. The decision will allow an additional 1200 MHz of spectrum, tripling the spectrum available for Wi-Fi.
“High-quality and affordable wireless services have never been more important in the everyday lives of Canadians. That’s why we’re making more spectrum available to support greater choice and affordability of wireless broadband. This decision will make staying connected easier for Canadians who rely on their Wi-Fi for accessing school, work and health care from home.” François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
What is Spectrum?
As communication devices become faster and more advanced, the internet “Spectrum” and conduits need to keep pace with the evolution of technology. With more communities becoming connected to the world wide web, a strain on resources and speed is inevitable, thus the need to continually update resources.
