Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024 (HKMW) is bringing together about 14,500 industry professionals from across the globe to tackle challenges and opportunities in the shipping sector. Running from November 17 to 23, the event features over 50 conferences, exhibitions, and networking sessions under the theme “Navigating to a Greener Future.”
The annual gathering comes as Hong Kong positions itself to become a leader in sustainable shipping practices. At the trade summit on November 18, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung highlighted the city’s progress. Among the key initiatives is the introduction of a green incentive scheme offering cash rewards to locally registered ships that meet high carbon efficiency standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Lam also unveiled the recently launched Action Plan on Green Fuel Bunkering, which includes building infrastructure for eco-friendly fuel, reducing port emissions, and collaborating with international partners to establish green shipping corridors. These measures are designed to strengthen the city’s standing as a hub for innovation in sustainable transport.
Beyond environmental priorities, this year’s event is showcasing Hong Kong’s role within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The city’s robust legal, financial, and logistics services are key assets in advancing regional integration. Acting Chief Executive Chan Kwok-ki noted at the Asian Logistics, Maritime and Aviation Conference (ALMAC) that the city ranked fourth in this year’s International Shipping Centre Development Index, underscoring its growing influence in global trade.
The week also includes a forum hosted by the IMO titled “From Waste to Wealth: Unlocking Investment Opportunities in Ship Recycling,” which explores sustainable ship disposal methods. Additionally, the debut of “Xin Hong Zhuan,” an intelligent research and training ship from Dalian Maritime University, has drawn attention to advancements in technology and education within the sector.
HKMW 2024 is positioning Hong Kong as a key player in addressing environmental challenges and fostering regional collaboration. Through innovation and sustainability, the city aims to redefine its role in the shipping industry.
