New Brunswick Premier to form majority Conservative government
New Brunswick Premier took the biggest political gamble of his career and it rewarded him with a majority government.
Premier Higgs rose to power after ousting the Liberal minority government and replaced it with a Conservative minority. Higgs saw his approval rates skyrocketed from 50% to that of 80% for his Government handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like any shrewd politician wanting power, Higgs saw an opportunity an took it.
The pandemic has turned the world upside down and has bankrupted businesses and wiped out the life savings of many. Knowing this, Higgs knew the Province was not willing to change government in the middle of a pandemic and called and early election.
Higgs Conservative secured a majority government by capturing 27 out of the possible 49 seats in the legislature. Liberal leader Kevin Vickers failed to win his riding and tendered his resignation as the leader of the party. The Liberals will retain their role as the official opposition with 17 seats.
