Former Black Canadian MP, Celina Caesar Chevannes has spoken out against Justin Trudeau’s claim of being a feminist, highlighting the number of women who have resigned from their positions within the Trudeau government. This criticism comes amid ongoing concerns about the treatment of women and minorities within Canadian politics.
The MP’s comments are particularly noteworthy given the historical underrepresentation of women in Canadian politics. As of the 2021 federal election, only 30% of MPs were women, despite efforts by some parties to increase female representation. For instance, the federal NDP has implemented formal quotas for women candidates, while the Liberal Party has voluntary targets in place.
The issue is further complicated by the fact that women of color face additional barriers in public life, including racism and sexism. Former Green Party leader Annamie Paul, Liberal cabinet minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, and NDP MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq have all spoken out about the challenges they faced while in office.
The former MP’s criticism of Trudeau’s feminist claims highlights the need for greater accountability and action to address these issues. As Sylvia Bashevkin, a professor of political science, notes, “representative democracy seems impaired, partial and unjust when women, as a majority of citizens, fail to see themselves reflected in the leadership of their polity” Watch the video below to hear her take.
