Dominique Anglade Shatters Political Glass Ceiling. First Black Women To Lead A Political Party In Quebec
With the ascension to the top job, Leader Anglade has now become the new face of politics in Canada. The newly minted Liberal leader has not only showed young black women they can become elected, she empowered them to lead.
The 2020 Quebec Liberal Party leadership election was to have taken place from May 30–31, 2020 after outgoing leader Philippe Couillard resigned on October 4, 2018 and left politics after the party finished second in the 2018 Quebec general election.
On March 20, 2020, the party suspended the election indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec. On May 11, 2020, candidate Alexandre Cusson withdrew from the race and after a meeting of the party’s executive committee, the sole remaining Dominique Anglade won the leadership position by acclamation.
Anglade was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in a by-election on November 9, 2015 and represents the electoral district of Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne as a member of the Quebec Liberal Party.
She served in the cabinet of Philippe Couillard as Deputy Premier of Quebec from 2017 to 2018, and was also the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade from 2016 to 2018. In 2019, she launched her campaign for the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party with a plan to return the party back to the nationalism.
Anglade was formerly associated with the Coalition Avenir Québec. She ran as a CAQ candidate in Fabre in the 2012 election, losing to Gilles Ouimet, and served as the president of the CAQ from 2012 to 2013. She left that position to become CEO of Montreal International.
