DeSantis Signs Absurd Gun Law, No Permits, Training or Background Checks Required

On April 3, 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill that would allow individuals to carry concealed firearms without undergoing a background check or training. The move comes just days after yet another mass shooting in America, highlighting the absurdity and lack of sensitivity on the part of DeSantis and other pro-gun politicians.

The bill, which will become law on July 1, has been heavily criticized by gun control advocates, who argue that it will make it easier for dangerous individuals to obtain firearms. Under the new law, anyone who legally owns a firearm will be allowed to carry it concealed without a permit, training, or background check. This means that individuals with a history of violence or mental illness could easily obtain and carry a firearm, putting public safety at risk.

The timing of DeSantis’ decision to sign the bill into law is particularly disturbing, given the recent spate of mass shootings in America. Just a week before the bill was signed, a transgender man killed three children and three adults at an elementary school in Nashville, and three people were killed and multiple injured at home in Baltimore, Maryland. Rather than taking steps to address the root causes of gun violence, DeSantis and other pro-gun politicians have chosen to double down on their efforts to weaken gun laws and make it easier for individuals to obtain firearms.

Gun manufacturers and the National Rifle Association (NRA) heavily lobbied for the bill, both of which were present at the signing ceremony. This highlights the extent to which pro-gun politicians are beholden to special interests rather than prioritizing the safety and well-being of their constituents.

But the issue with DeSantis extends far beyond his stance on gun control. Under his tyranny, Florida has become increasingly reminiscent of a third-world country ruled by a ruthless dictator. DeSantis has repeatedly targeted LGBTQ rights, blocked the teaching of Black history and slavery, and threatened teachers and scientists who support vaccine mandates.

DeSantis’ politics and policies are clearly geared towards capturing the far-right extremist vote, particularly in anticipation of a potential presidential run. His disregard for human rights and basic decency is nothing short of alarming. Florida has become a state where fundamental human rights and values seem to go to die.

DeSantis’ latest move to weaken gun laws is just one of many examples of his disregard for public safety and the well-being of his constituents. It’s time for voters in Florida and across America to hold politicians like DeSantis accountable and demand stronger gun laws and policies prioritizing public safety over special interests.
