DeSantis Doubles Down On Banning Afro-American A.P. Studies, On The Cusp Of Black History Month

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has recently come under fire for his veto of a proposed African American curriculum for Advanced Placement courses in Florida schools. This move has been widely criticized as a disgrace, as it not only denies students the opportunity to learn about the history of slavery, black history, and LGBTQ history, but also deprives them of the ability to earn college credits while still in high school and the potential savings of thousands of dollars.

DeSantis’ veto of the African American curriculum is particularly troubling given the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality in the United States. The lack of representation and acknowledgement of the contributions and struggles of African Americans in the education system perpetuates a culture of ignorance and prejudice. Furthermore, the veto of this curriculum will disproportionately affect students of colour who may not have access to the resources or opportunities to gain college credit through other means.

Adding insult to injury, DeSantis’ actions come at a particularly insensitive time, as it is nearing Black History Month, a time when the country reflects on the contributions and struggles of African Americans throughout history. This decision by the Governor is seen as an attempt to downplay the importance of Black history and culture and further marginalize the African American community.

DeSantis’ actions are not only a disgrace but also a clear indication of his disregard for the education and well-being of Floridians, particularly students of colour. This is not the first time the Governor has been criticized for his actions toward marginalized communities. He has also been accused of banning books and spreading false information about COVID-19, disproportionately affecting communities of colour.

It is clear that DeSantis’ actions are a political ploy to gain popularity among his base and pave the way for a potential run for the White House. However, this kind of divisive and discriminatory behaviour should not be tolerated by a leader who is supposed to represent and serve all citizens. We must hold our elected officials accountable for their actions and demand that they prioritize the education and well-being of all citizens, regardless of race or ethnicity.
