The Jamaican women’s soccer team, the Reggae Girlz, has become the first Caribbean team to win a Women’s World Cup match. Their 1-0 win over Panama was their first win and the first time in the teams’ history that they held the lead in the Women’s World Cup. After their games with a tie against Brazil and France, they placed second in Group F and will move to the 16-team knockout round for the first time.
Despite their success, they had to work hard to receive adequate crowdfunding to travel to the World Cup. In 2019, their Women’s World Cup debut, they lost all three matches and were sent home.
The team’s journey has been compared to the tale of Cinderella. Head coach Lorne had some jokes to add to that comparison. “I don’t know, Cinderella wears a pretty dress,” he said. “And if we can wear a pretty dress, we’ll put it on.”
In the upcoming Olympic qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Jamaica and Canada will face off in a bid to secure their spot. Canada’s hopes were dashed when they suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat against Australia, who are co-hosting the Women’s World Cup. The crucial qualifying match will take place later this year in September, with games scheduled in both Jamaica and Toronto, Canada.
But for now, the team’s current focus is this World Cup. Coach Lorne said they’re “just going to take it one day at a time,” and the anticipation to see how they do is high. The team’s energy and fierceness have been felt throughout this tournament and will indeed carry on as they prepare to play Colombia On Tuesday, August 8th.
Jamaica’s independence day is on Sunday, August 6th, and the country has many accomplishments and things to be proud of, including their women’s team, who continues to make their country proud and display their love for their people.
