China Vows Stability Support in Myanmar’s Conflict-Torn Rakhine State Amid Escalating Crisis

In a bid to address the escalating conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, China has pledged unwavering support for stability in the region. This commitment was reiterated during a recent UN Security Council briefing convened in New York on April 4, 2024.

China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, took center stage during the briefing, emphasizing China’s pivotal role in promoting peace and stability in the troubled region. Geng underscored China’s commitment to employing various diplomatic channels to advance peace initiatives, emphasizing that as a friendly neighbor to Myanmar, China closely monitors developments in Rakhine State.

Acknowledging the recent surge in fighting within Rakhine State, Geng stressed that the conflict remains an internal affair for the country, urging the international community to respect its sovereignty. Moreover, he urged all concerned parties to engage in dialogue and diplomacy to seek a peaceful resolution.

China’s proactive stance in addressing the crisis includes ongoing diplomatic efforts, with a delegation currently engaged in the region to facilitate dialogue among conflicting parties towards achieving a sustainable peace agreement. Expressing gratitude for Bangladesh’s support in hosting refugees from Rakhine State, Geng recognized the complexities surrounding repatriation efforts and emphasized China’s commitment to assisting both Myanmar and Bangladesh in resolving the issue.

Rejecting the notion of imposing sanctions on the country, Geng advocated for dialogue, mutual understanding, and trust-building measures to foster an environment conducive to repatriation and conflict resolution. He applauded the positive strides made by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in engaging Myanmar and providing vital humanitarian aid.

China’s policy of fostering friendship and stability extends to all communities in the region, with a firm focus on promoting development and well-being. Geng urged continued international support for ASEAN’s leadership in the area, emphasizing the importance of upholding the “ASEAN way” of solidarity and dialogue as essential pillars for regional peace and stability.
