After more than 1,000 days of being imprisoned in a Chinese cell on charges of stealing state secrets, Michael Kovrig, and Michael Spavor, were finally released.

Korvig and Spavor, were arrested in December 2018 shortly after Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer was detained in Vancouver by Canadian officials. Meng Wanzhou was charged with committing fraud by misleading the HSBC bank about the company’s business dealings in Iran. The charges were brought forward by the US Justice department alleging Meng Wanzhou had violated international sanctions by doing business with Iran.

The two Michaels were greeted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Calgary International Airport upon their arrival in Canada.

“These two men have gone through an unbelievably difficult ordeal. For the past 1,000 days, they have shown strength, perseverance, resilience, and grace, and we are all inspired by that.” Said, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

After the release of Meng Wanzhou, China again stated there was no connection between her detention and the arrest of the two Canadians. However, Saint-Jacques, Canada’s Ambassador, thinks otherwise.

After her release, Meng thanked the Canadian people and the country’s justice system for upholding the rule of law and apologized for the inconvenience she caused.
