In response to mounting violence in Haiti, Global Affairs Canada has announced a temporary reduction of non-essential personnel from its embassy in Port-au-Prince. This decision follows a comprehensive risk assessment highlighting the volatile security situation and limited access to essential supplies.
“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of Canadians,” emphasized a spokesperson for Global Affairs.
The drawdown of embassy staff underscores the seriousness of the situation, exacerbated by the recent resignation of the Prime Minister and other key government officials. Consequently, nations such as Canada are taking preemptive measures to protect their citizens.
While the embassy remains closed to the public, the Canadian ambassador to Haiti will continue engaging with local stakeholders and international partners.
“Canada remains steadfast in supporting Haitian-led solutions to the crises,” affirmed the statement from Global Affairs.
Despite the reduced embassy personnel, essential consular services for Canadians in need will continue uninterrupted.
The drawdown serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective action to address the root causes of violence and instability. As the international community grapples with the crisis, Canada reaffirms its commitment to peace and stability in the country.
