For a chance to get back to normalcy, we must move past this COVID-19 pandemic. This means
that no one is safe until everyone is inoculated. When COVID-19 first began, the Government of
Canada made a commitment to protect the health and safety of all Canadians. Since then, they
have been continuously working to ensure that every Canadian across the country has access to
the vaccine.
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada has now received a total of more than
66 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines – enough to fully vaccinate every eligible person in
Canada – two months ahead of the original goal of September.
“The Government of Canada has worked extremely hard to deliver vaccines to Canadians as fast
as possible, and now has enough doses for every eligible person in Canada – two months ahead
of our original projections,” The Hon. Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and
Procurement. “This milestone was made possible by a true Team Canada effort across
government, working closely with a broad range of vaccine suppliers and the immense efforts of
dedicated public servants, who have worked around the clock since day one in a relentless push
to keep us protected.”
The Public Health Agency of Canada is responsible for the vaccine rollout. The Canadian
government has dedicated over $9 billion to obtain vaccines and provide international support.
An additional donation of 17.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to aid international
needs was announced on July 12, 2021.
Canada has received more than 9 million doses between December 2020 and March 2021. It
further received another 50 million doses between April 2021 and June 2021. With over 80% of
eligible people in the country given their first dose and approximately 64% given their second,
Canadians have set an example what the road to normalcy must look like.
Today’s announcement would not have been possible without the Public Health Agency of Canada in
partnership with the Canadian Armed Forces in deploying vaccines across the country.
