Kapyong Barracks will finally be transferred back into the hand of Manitoba’s Treaty 1 Indigenous People
The Government of Canada and the Manitoba Metis Federation have resolved outstanding litigation related to Canada’s planned sale of the former Kapyong Barracks land in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Kapyong Barracks have been decommissioned for over a decade and the land was to be transferred back into the ownership of the Treaty One Indigenous people.
“This settlement is a demonstration of Canada’s commitment to strengthening their relationship with our Manitoba Métis Community. I am pleased that we have been able to negotiate a way forward that recognizes the importance of our government-to-government partnership and respects the rights of the Manitoba Métis – Canada’s negotiating partner in the creation of this province.” David Chartrand LL.D (hon.), O.M., President, Manitoba Metis Federation
“National Defence is committed to renewing relationships with Indigenous peoples in the communities where we operate. This settlement will help strengthen our relationship with the Manitoba Métis. In the spirit of reconciliation, we look forward to building on this foundation.” The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence
With the land firmly back into the hands of the Indigenous people, construction can start. The land will be used for affordable housing, shopping centres and all the traditional amenities to be found in a new development. This development will be the largest urban reservation in Winnipeg.
