The new funding is in addition to its already $8 Billion in 2022
Today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced additional assistance for Ukraine at the NATO Summit in Lithuania, showcasing unwavering support. NATO Allies committed to enhancing deterrence and defence capabilities while bolstering their aid to Ukraine. G7 Leaders reiterated their dedication to a free, democratic Ukraine capable of self-defence. In partnership with key nations, long-term security partnerships were pledged, encompassing defence, economic recovery, citizen protection, and Euro-Atlantic integration.
To back these commitments, a significant $541 million was announced to be given to Ukraine and transatlantic security, building upon substantial contributions since 2022. Efforts to double presence in Ukraine under Operation REASSURANCE were also announced.
Continued provision of military equipment and training, including additional drone cameras, will support Ukraine’s self-defence capabilities. Training programs hosted at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean will empower Ukrainian Officer cadets. Moreover, the support provided through the Comprehensive Assistance Package will focus on non-lethal aid.
In recognition of the pressing issue of cyber threats, substantial assistance of $2.7 million was pledged to bolster Ukraine’s cyber security measures. Additionally, collaboration with NATO member states culminated in signing a statement to establish a coalition for training the Ukrainian Air Force in operating and maintaining F-16 fighter aircraft.
To fortify maritime defence, a noteworthy contract worth $450 million was awarded to Thales Canada Inc. for in-service support of the Canadian Armed Forces’ fleet. Furthermore, the Framework Nation, hosting the new NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence in Montreal, will address climate change’s security implications, particularly in the Arctic. Committing $40.4 million over five years, the Center will contribute to understanding and mitigating these challenges.
The resolute support for Ukraine and NATO demonstrates an unwavering commitment to democracy, global security, and the sovereignty of Ukraine. Through financial aid, military support, and capacity-building programs, efforts are focused on strengthening collective defence capabilities within NATO and bolstering Ukraine’s resilience.
