It is Day 6 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and Canada beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1.
After their tie game of 0-0 against Nigeria, their comeback game against the Republic of Ireland was crucial as they moved to the top of Group B. Although Ireland scored the first point of the game, making it Ireland’s first-ever point at the World Cup, Canada fought to come back, and at halftime, the score was tied 1-1. Forward player Adriana Leon scored in the second half, breaking the tie for a victory of 2-0. “We know how to win and we did it when it really mattered.” said head coach Bev Priestman. Canada now plays co-host team Australia on Monday at the Perth Rectangular Stadium in Perth, Australia.
Five Canadian players made their World Cup debut: starter players Kailen Sheridan, Vanessa Gilles and Julia Grosso, and the finisher Cloé Lacasse and Evelyne Viens.
Team Canada has quite a history and has come a long way. The Canada women’s team played their first international match on July 7, 1986, losing 2–0 to the United States. The team played their first major tournament at the 1995 Women’s World Cup in Sweden. The team achieved one draw and two losses in group play but did not advance. Their first success in a major tournament was the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States. Canada finished fourth, reaching the semifinals for the first time in a significant global game. This year will mark Canada’s eighth consecutive year participating since the first World Cup 1995. Women’s Canada’s achievements include:
- Winning a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
- Winning the CONCACAF Women’s Championship twice.
- Being two-time bronze Olympic medalists.
As Team Canada focuses on the next game against Australia while trying to advance, they will continue to thrive and do their best while representing Canada.
