Canada’s goal is to reduced greenhouse gas by 12 megatonnes per year
When the world seemed to come to a stop, Earth began to breathe again. With the multiple COVID-19 lockdowns, factories closed, and all transportation grounded to a halt, there was reduced polluting happening around the world. CO2 emission dropped 7% in 2020 alone but as the world slowly gets back to normalcy it is most likely to rise again. From a human standpoint, the pandemic is horrible resulting in 4.1 million deaths worldwide. From a climate perspective, it was a well needed recharge for the earth.
Today, Adam van Koeverden, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth and to the Minister of Canadian Heritage (Sport) and Member of Parliament for Milton, announced the Government of Canada’s plan to plant two billion trees over 10 years in partnership with Conservation Halton.

Healthy tree coverage and a vibrant urban canopy are essential for our air quality, our health, our shade, and our regional biodiversity! I am absolutely thrilled that, as part of our 2 Billion Trees program, 50,000 trees will be planted right here in our region in partnership with Conservation Halton — that’s a new tree for every family in Milton! This news brings with it a more resilient community, green jobs, environmental protection and long-lasting benefits for the people of Halton Region, now and in the future.”

With help from organizations across the country, Canada’s plan to plant two billion trees is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 12 megatonnes annually by 2050. Conservation Halton wants to plant 50,000 trees at 36 sites across the region. This program continues the efforts from the government in advancing tree planting to help with climate change. Alongside all the planned restoration projects in ecosystems such as wetlands, creeks, former farmland, and forested area and the creation of jobs.
The Two Billion Tree project will increase the number of trees typically planted in a decade by 40%. Natural Resources Canada has support from Environment and Climate Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in implementing this plan.
