Nunavut became Canada’s Third Territory
“Today on Nunavut Day, we celebrate the 21st anniversary of the creation of Nunavut. This day acknowledges the establishment of Canada’s newest and largest Territory. It is significant, as Nunavut Day represents an historic milestone in the Inuit journey towards self-determination.
As we celebrate today, we must acknowledge the long and difficult struggle that Inuit have pursued to have their rights recognized by Canada. A significant milestone was the signing of the Nunavut Agreement in 1993, which allowed for the establishment of Nunavut as a Territory in 1999. Last August, following extensive negotiations and consultations with the Government of Nunavut, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, and other Inuit organizations, another major milestone was reached with the signing of a Nunavut Devolution Agreement in Principle (AIP). This AIP cleared the way for discussions, now underway, to reach a Final Devolution Agreement. These milestones demonstrate a successful and lasting partnership between Canada and Nunavut.
As the land on which it stands and the sea that hugs its shores, Nunavut continues to evolve, strengthened by the lessons learned by nurturing traditional values, history, and a rich Inuit culture.
“Our success will come from collaborative efforts, such as the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee and the implementation of the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework. We know there is more work to be done in partnership to address issues around protecting language and culture, housing, access to mental health support and working to increase food security in the Territory.
Our relationship will continue to strengthen as we work on our shared priorities, acknowledge our difficult history and listen to learn better ways to build a brighter future together. A future where Canada will continue to be shaped by the creation of Nunavut and the inclusion of Inuit knowledge and culture, and one that supports Inuit self-determination.”
Today, we join together, as a united people to celebrate the residents of Nunavut on this, the 21st anniversary of Nunavut Day.
