After a tumultuous 48 hours and more than a dozen cabinet resignations, Boris Johnson finally decided to step down
Boris Johnson said in a statement on Thursday that he had decided to step down as prime minister following comments from Conservative M.P.s and the resignations of 60 Conservative M.P.s and ministers. About one-third of Britain’s 179 government ministers, parliamentary private secretaries, and trade envoys resigned.
The notable included former Conservative Prime Minister John Major, Health Secretary Sajid Javid, Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and Johnson’s Solicitor General for England and Wales, Alex Chalk. He called for him to leave immediately. Johnson stated he planned to stay as prime minister until a new leader gets elected.
“For the overall wellbeing of the country, Mr. Johnson should not remain in Downing Street,” Major said.
“I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership — and you have therefore lost my confidence too,” Javid wrote to Johnson.
Boris Johnson’s scandal included:
- Not following COVID-19 lockdown rules.
- Partying in Downing Street during the pandemic.
- Accusations of cronyism involving contracts and lobbying.
- Appointing a minister accused of sexual assault
- Appointing a minister known for allegedly taking financial kickbacks from lobbying groups
Johnson survived a vote of no confidence by Conservative M.P.s in June when the public was discontent in Britain. Johnson was often referred to as the U.K. version of Trump because he was seen as Teflon. But as he has come to know, Teflon does weaken and makes room for cracks in the armor.
