Black History Month Honours Portia May White

Ms. Portia May White was the first Black opera singer in Canada

Black History Month is a time to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of black individuals who have made a significant impact in their respective fields. One such individual is Portia White, who made history as the first black opera singer to receive national recognition in Canada.

Born on June 24, 1911, in Truro, Nova Scotia, Portia White was raised in a musical family and showed an early interest in singing. However, at the time, opportunities for black artists were limited, and she was often discouraged from pursuing a career in music. Despite these obstacles, she persevered and eventually made her professional debut in 1941, both classical European music and African-American spirituals.

White’s talent and powerful voice soon caught the attention of audiences and critics alike, and she soon became a sought-after performer. She went on to tour across Canada and the United States, performing in prestigious venues such as the Eaton Auditorium and Governor General’s Rideau Hall residence in Ottawa. In 1944, she became the first Canadian to perform at New York’s Town Hall. A space that rarely saw someone of colour perform on stage.

In recognition of her accomplishments, the Government of Canada designated White as a person of national historical significance. She was honoured posthumously with the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 East Coast Music Awards. The Portia White Atrium is named after her and Portia White Court in the Citadel High School in Nova Scotia. In addition, an African Nova Scotian Music Award was created in 2017 to honour the Portia White Youth Award.

Portia White’s legacy continues to be celebrated and remembered today. She paved the way for black artists in the world of classical music and showed that talent knows no bounds. Her determination and passion for music serve as an inspiration for all, and her contributions to the world of opera will never be forgotten.

Portia White’s life and achievements serve as a reminder of the perseverance, talent, and determination of black individuals who have overcome obstacles and made a significant impact in their respective fields. Black History Month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate and honour her legacy and to continue to inspire future generations to follow in her footsteps.
