Wes has been bestowed the honour of being named the G.O.A.T for Canadian hip-hop music

Maestro Fresh Wes is widely regarded as the first black superstar in hip-hop music. Born Wesley Williams on March 31, 1968, in Toronto, Canada, Maestro Fresh Wes rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a pioneering rapper and hip-hop artist. He is widely credited with being the first Canadian rapper to bring hip-hop to the mainstream and to achieve worldwide recognition.

Maestro Fresh Wes started in music as a member of the group Fresh Wes and the Fresh Band. He released his first solo single, “Let Your Backbone Slide,” in 1989, which became an instant hit in Canada and established him as a rising star in the hip-hop community. The song, the first Canadian rap song to reach the top 40 charts, earned him a Juno Award for Best Rap Recording in 1990 and solidified his status as a pioneering artist in the Canadian hip-hop scene.

Maestro Fresh Wes’ success was not limited to Canada. He went on to release several successful albums and become one of the first Canadian hip-hop artists to achieve international recognition. He performed at major events and venues worldwide, including the Juno Awards, the MuchMusic Video Awards, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

In addition to his musical achievements, Maestro Fresh Wes is also known for his activism and philanthropy. He is a passionate advocate for social justice and has used his platform to raise awareness about issues such as poverty, homelessness, and the importance of education. He has also been involved in various charity organizations, including War Child, Save the Children, SickKids Hospital, Covenant House, Special Olympics, Battered Women’s Support Services (BWSS), and the African AIDS Society.

Maestro Fresh Wes’ impact on hip-hop music cannot be overstated. He will always be the first Canadian hip-hop artist to achieve global recognition and paved the way for future generations of Canadian hip-hop artists such as Drake, The Weekend, Haviah Mighty, Torey Lanes and so on. He remains an inspiration to hip-hop fans and musicians worldwide, which is why 2020, we named him the greatest Canadian hip-hop artist of all time. A title well deserved for the hall of fame songwriter inductee.
