The Biden-Harris administration seems to have donned blinders, willfully ignorant or oblivient to the groundswell of discontent brewing among the youth of America. As the administration remains tone-deaf to the cries for peace amidst the war and destruction ravaging Gaza, it risks alienating a significant portion of its own electorate – the 18 to 25-year-old demographic, whose votes were instrumental in propelling Biden to victory.
Across the nation, over 40 universities have become hotbeds of protest, with students erecting encampments in solidarity against the violence in Gaza. Contrary to the narratives peddled by certain media outlets, these protests have largely been peaceful, devoid of the anti-Semitic rhetoric that detractors would have you believe. Instead, the youth are articulating simple demands: an immediate ceasefire and an end to unconditional support for Israel, alongside amnesty for those participating in the protests. These demands are not radical; they are borne out of a desire for justice and humanity.
Yet, the Biden-Harris administration seems steadfast in its support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hawkish policies. It begs the question: why is the administration willing to stake its reputation on the altar of Israeli interests? The majority of Americans are growing weary of their tax dollars funding foreign wars, especially when the return on investment is nothing but further disdain from nations worldwide. Is the allure of campaign contributions from pro-Israel lobbyists blinding the administration to the plight of its own people?
It appears that the administration is out of touch with the prevailing sentiment in the country. The youth, disillusioned by decades of perpetual warfare, are demanding a shift in priorities. They reject the notion that American exceptionalism justifies military interventions that only serve to perpetuate suffering and instability abroad. The Biden-Harris administration’s reluctance to heed these calls for change is not just perplexing; it’s downright negligent.
As the midterm elections loom on the horizon, the Democrats find themselves on precarious ground. Should they suffer defeat, they will have no one to blame but themselves. Their failure to address the concerns of the youth, coupled with their misguided foreign policies, will undoubtedly factor into the electorate’s decision-making process. The administration’s history of hegemony and its propensity to prioritize special interests over the common good have eroded public trust and tarnished America’s standing on the world stage.
Let us not diminish the administration’s achievements, but let us also hold them accountable for their shortcomings. True leadership requires listening to the voices of the people, especially when those voices are clamoring for peace and justice. If the Biden-Harris administration truly aspires to build a more perfect union, it must start by putting the interests of the American people ahead of those of foreign powers. The youth of America are not asking for the moon; they are asking for an end to the cycle of war and a return to the principles of diplomacy and compassion. It’s time for the administration to listen, before it’s too late.
