Bombers have all the reasons to hold their heads high when they return back to Winnipeg
Last night’s 109th playing of the Grey Cup saw the Toronto Argonauts squeak out a one-point victory over the back-to-back defending champions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It was a heartbreaking end to another stellar season by the Blue Bombers.
Despite the outcome, they will come home to a hero’s welcome from the greatest fans in the CFL. For the last couple of years, the Bombers have thrilled and excited fans across Manitoba with their highly explosive offense and shutdown defense. The explosiveness of the Bombers was displayed when Janarion Grant made Grey Cup history with a 102-yard punt return TD in the fourth quarter.
Going into Mosaic Stadium, the Bombers were the favourite to hoist the Grey Cup. Still, former Bomber rookie, now Argos middle linebacker Henoc Muamba was determined not to make it happen. His stellar play on defense, multiple quarterback sacks, and a critical interception in the fourth quarter stopped the Bombers from scoring. It propelled the Argonauts to the championship, earning him the Grey Cup M.V.P. most outstanding Canadian.
Former Bomber hometown hero Andrew Harris, who was shipped off to Toronto at the start of the season, hoisted his fourth Grey Cup in his illustrious career. He is sure to be a first-ballot hall-of-fame inductee once he hangs up his cleats.
The Bombers have all the reasons to hold their head high, as they were only one point away from accomplishing the rare three-peat that has only been done a few times in league history. They will begin the 2023 season with key players under contract for a few years, which is why they are still expected to make another appearance in next year’s great cup.
