Myanmar Military overthrows democratically elected government
In the breaking morning on Monday February 1, Myanmar’s democratically elected president Win Myint, his parliament and civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown in a Military Coup.
The Army’s spokes person took to national Tv to announce that the military has taken control of the country and declared a state of emergency for a year. President Myint, his cabinet and Aung San Suu Kyi have all been arrested and are being detained at undisclosed locations.
On November 8, 2020 Mynamar held its general election that provided a strong mandate to the National League for Democracy (NLD), reflecting the clear will of the people of Myanmar to continue on the hard-won path of democratic reform. That path to reform has once again been derailed by yet another military coup.
UN Secretary-General António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres urges the military leadership to respect the will of the people of Myanmar and adhere to democratic norms, with any differences to be resolved through peaceful dialogue.
“All leaders must act in the greater interest of Myanmar’s democratic reform, engaging in meaningful dialogue, refraining from violence and fully respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.” Said António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres
Countries from around the world have issued statements of condemnation by the Mynamar Army, but none are likely to intervene by force. At most, sanctions will be forthcoming which has never proven to be a strong deterrent with a nation that has strong ties to China.
